Have a question about investing, budgeting, side hustles, or any money-related issue causing you stress? Ask the question below, and I’ll answer it in a future post.
What do you use for apps to budget? I don’t use and all but I did start using a personal bill pay service and it’s made all the difference in my personal finances.
$175/month to never have to worry about a bill for the rest of my life. (I pay them to pay my bills). What do you think?
Interesting. I'd love to learn more about the bill paying service. $175/month would be quite a lot for most people. Do you mind linking to the service you use? Would be interested to check it out.
I'm on VA disability and SS disability and I can't shake the feeling that investing in stocks is a scam. You can't depend on the future and the past can't predict the future, all you have is the present. My money is in high-yield savings accounts. I know that's not the answer either.
Hey Emily. You're not alone, lots of people have the same skepticism about investing. I'll address some of the common misconceptions in a round up post in the newsletter soon (stay tuned to your inbox).
When I write about investing, I take an evidence based approach. Meaning we rely on the data and studies from highly-respected researchers.
Your timing is good, very soon I will start sending out evidence based investing posts (I think on Mondays) that will help people decide what investments are likely Scammy/BS and what is backed by the evidence. At the end of the day, anything you do with your money has risk (including sticking in a savings account) best we can do is follow the evidence, and pick a strategy that aligns with our goals.
Well said. I'm already thinking of an entire article to write about this subject. Can I ask which specific small stuff you find yourself spending the most time on? Budgeting, Expense tracking, investing, etc...?
Expense tracking is critical. I never know if I can safely spend. My income is basically fixed and tight. Highlight for me how much I'm suffering before you rescue me with your magic money tricks. Try letting us twist in the wind a bit longer. It can fuel motivation, smart actions, new habits.
Paying off student loans and dealing with unexpected expenses like traveling in a cab, eating out, paying for events, concerts, or going to parties, getting scammed (charging more money than the average or promising the quality of something that isn't there) etc, those are money problems I cannot shake off.
