It's surprising as hell that your expenses can actually increase by as much as 100% in retirement. We'd better plan for it.

I noticed this scenario with my grandparents that recently passed, both at 95 years old. It seemed after 80'ish (and grandpa started showing signs of dementia)they started staying home. It seemed so swift how quickly they went from independence to dependence. They hired house cleaners, landscapers, aides for doctor visits, and people to grocery shop. Their utilities went up as they remained home and became sedentary. They needed walkers, traded out furniture for lift-chairs, and ramps were installed in what seemed like everywhere. For the last 8 years of their lives, they were completely dependent on live-in nurses, which the costs for that were exorbitant. Luckily they had the finances to cover it, but it was always a discussion, so it must have been close to not affordable.

I see myself at 50 years old around the corner... Living in California (for me) is already like going in reverse. The cost of living increasing faster than I can keep up, and I only have me to depend on.
