Interesting, Ben. I used to be promotion-focused but when a lay-off was looming, I changed to prevention-focused.

Hey Denis, tou highlight an important point. While some people have closer to absolute states of either promotion or prevention for many of us (myself included) our finances and job security can push us in one direction or the other

Never had a 9-5 until I was 28.

Then got one, hated it and quit after 2 weeks.

Wish I had read this article before then 🙏

Love this, Ben. I feel you when you say you are a mix of both. I find that in my work as a homebuilder I am prevention focused, seeing my work as a means to provide (while also spending time with interesting people), though with my side hustle (writing) I feel a lot more promotion focused, being interested in pushing, pushing, getting to a place of self-actualization. I imagine this framework might be applicable to even more of life, as well.

Thanks Martin, I approach my 9-5 and side hustle in a very similar way

Wow this was super - I've never come across prevention vs promotion focus - but that paradigm explains so much! What are your thoughts on "sovereignty focus" for people who optimise for freedom and independence - which inherently doesn't fit into either of those 2 buckets?

Thanks Zan. I am not familiar with the "sovereignty focus", I will add it to the list for research and report back what I find!

Nice! Well it's something I came up with, but I've been inspired by books like "company of one" by paul jarvis, and "the sovereign individual", and "the minimalist entrepreneur" - you might enjoy them too
