I also don’t want to have to clean or hire people to clean a big house. That causes stress and eats into spare time. I almost miss the days of being able to fully clean my apartment in less than an hour. I do like the extra space I have now, but I don’t need much more.
I was just approached by a friend about this very thing. He needs a 3rd income (him, his wife, and a 3rd) in order to afford said McMansion. Realtors and brokers are promoting "cohabitation" as a selling point now. "Can't afford it, rent out all the rooms, or build an ADU in your back yard." Living beyond your means and at the dependence of others is a disaster waiting to happen.
Not to mention the effects on the environment & mental health of building out every square inch of our planet! This is the reason my husband & I bought a 1,600 SF 1-level home as our first. With 2 kids & compared to many peers with this ongoing trend, it felt sometimes like we were Tiny Housers. There is no substitute for being OUTDOORS & having a YARD or some public green space to escape to, as we all learned during COVID. Thank you for writing about this very real & ridiculous problem our society has created for itself!
